L. Gammaitoni at the Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics of Small Systems workshop

Rome, September 19th 2017

Luca Gammaitoni, NiPS Lab director, is presenting a talk at the international workshop "Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics of Small Systems" Roma, September 18-20, 2017.

The talk will be given at 12:15 at the AULA CONVERSI at the Dipartimento di Fisica, Universita' Sapienza in Rome.

Title of the talk: Fundamental thermodynamic limits in memory preservation

Once written, any memory is doomed to loose its content after some time, if no action is taken. In modern computers, to avoid memory losses, a refresh procedure is periodically performed. In this paper we present theoretical and experimental study of sub-k_BT system to evaluate the minimum energy required to preserve one bit of information over time. Two main conclusions are drawn: i) You can keep your memory for free: the energetic cost to preserve information for a fixed time duration with a given error probability can be arbitrarily reduced if the refresh procedure is performed often enough. ii) You cannot keep it forever: the Heisenberg uncertainty principle sets an upper bound on the memory lifetime.

Gubbio Scienza: Micro Energy 2017, NiPS Summer School 2017 & much more

During the last ten days, the town of Gubbio (Italy) has held a lot of activities on micro energies. For scientists from all over the world, but even for families and kids.
The two main events were:

  • NiPS Summer School 2017 - Energy Harvesting: models and applications, June 30 - July 3, 2017
  • Micro Energy 2017 Conference: 3 - 7 July, 2017

But Gubbio Scienza has been much more!
Please, visit the Gubbio Scienza Facebook page and the Gubbio Scienza website and discover all the activities of the last 10 days.

Adi Bulsara form SPAWAR System Center meets L. Gammaitoni to discuss future collaboration

April 22, 2017 - Tempe (AZ) USA

Dr. Adi Bulsara from SPAWAR System Center, San Diego, meets L. Gammaitoni from NiPS to discuss future collaboration.

NiPS Laboratory has a long collaboration record with SPAWAR on sensor devices and nonlinear stochastic dynamics. During the meeting were presented recent development on nonlinear energy harvesting for sensing applications at micro and nano scales. These results will be most probably presented at the next international conference to be held in Gubbio, Italy, on July 3-7 2017.
